Audiovisual Translation Tools

Useful resources and tools for young AV translators

Basic methods of AV translation:
1. Subtitling (Surtitling)
2. Voice-over
3. Dubbing

1. Subtitling

 Available software for inserting subtitles:
http://dotsub.com/
Upload your video, transcribe it and begin translating. Disadvantages: Lowered control over the precision with which a given subtitle is inserted. Minimal unit of time = 1 second.
Subtitle Workshop (e.g. 2.51), freeware
The Subtitle Workshop Manual
Easy to use, translator-friendly interface, relatively good control over time precision, the programme inserts the starting point of the next subtitle automatically. Drawbacks: No indication whether the time we specify for the duration of a single subtitle is sufficient to be read comfortably by a viewer.

EdList: user-friendly software for inserting subtitles (automatic beginnings, compares verse length - duration of a subtitle ratio)

Technical facts for inserting subtitles:
Nowadays we can rely on professional programmes and specialists who are skilled at inserting subtitles. However, it is not uncommon that the translator takes over the technical matters and is in charge of inserting subtitles. Here are some rules how to go right about it.

2. Voice-over

Golden rules:
-target text must be significantly shortened
-the translator cooperates with the reader and is present during the rehearsal
